Karel Avenue Upgrade – Bridge Construction & Widening

The $28.7 million Karel Avenue Upgrade for Main Roads WA was part of the State Government’s METRONET project. The upgrade included road widening works from Farrington Road to the Berrigan Drive roundabout and modifying roundabout approaches to enable two lanes in each direction.

FSC's Role

Major subcontractor engaged by Georgiou to undertake all bridge construction and widening works for the project including the widening the existing Karel Avenue bridge over Roe Highway and construction of a replacement bridge over the ARC freight line using a top-down approach. Key elements included,

  • Bridge 1595 (Bridge construction over rail)
  • Bridge 1482 (Bridge widening over Roe Highway)

Scope of works

  • Construction of substructure piers (footings, bridge piers and restraint blocks, bearing pads and bearings).
  • Construction of abutments (MSE wall panels, wingwalls, footings) – in situ and cast in items.
  • Construction of all temporary works. 
  • All reo, formwork and concrete pours.
  • Installation of tee-roff beams (including temporary electrification screens).
  • Bridge deck and approach slab construction (including supply and installation of all expansion joint components.
  • Installation of median bridge barrier and transition barriers for full bridge length.
  • Supply and installation of all miscellaneous steelworks and cast in items e.g. bolts, brackets & expansion joint cover plates .
  • Installation of electrification and anti-throw screens.  bolts, brackets & expansion joint cover plates
